Japan Fashion Week: Mintdesigns

Mintdesigns usually shows some of our favorite collections at Japan Fashion week, and this year, we were intrigued by their use of color and explorations on plaids and stripes. In fact, the kaleidoscopic plaid looks a lot like a plaid we designed for our collection recently! Stripes and plaids begin to turn in on themselves, creating circles and stars. Colors are soft with flourescent pops in the shoes.

Men's Wear: White Mountaineering

Are you a guy that wants to look smashing while manning in it up in the great outdoors? Then check out Japanese label, White Mountaineering. There are lots of cool prints and colors inspired by Nordic sweaters, cross-stitch and Native or Aztec designs. Hopefully these pretty items can also withstand the test of outdoor rough-housing, and not get you in trouble if you run into any drunk campers with guns out there. On second though, maybe these are better left for city wearing.

Collab: Ken Done + Something Else

photos via Style Bubble

Something Else by Natalie Wood is a street-smart label from down under that has often caught our eye with its innovative prints, with are often collaborations with artists. Ken Done is an Australian icon, synonymous with the 80s, tourist-charming t-shirts, tea towels and such. And so, it is a surprising collaboration that seems to have taken a lot of photoshop work to pull off. The results are sometimes cosmic and psychedelic, and sometimes dreamy and textural. The artist's work has been re-contextualized for a modern audience, and though his work is hardly recognizable in these prints, the results are stunning. The SS 12 collection is currently being shown at the Ken Done Gallery.

Wild Horses

Milk from a Thistle is the brainchild of Sydney-based designer Danielle Atkinson, whose previous life was in indie music. She has since returned to nurture her first love, fashion, and with her Autumn 2011 collection shows these amazing digitally-printed horses placed cleverly on the bottom half of dresses and skirts. Paired with bold stripes, there is an easy but unexpected pop to her looks, and everything looks extremely soft and wearable.

Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty

Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty, opening at the Costume Institute May 4th, will..."celebrate the late Alexander McQueen's extraordinary contributions to fashion. From his postgraduate collection of 1992 to his final runway presentation which took place after his death in February 2010, Mr. McQueen challenged and expanded the understanding of fashion beyond utility to a conceptual expression of culture, politics, and identity. His iconic designs constitute the work of an artist whose medium of expression was fashion. " Here we've compiled some of our favorites of McQueen's looks and prints. Inspiration for his collection have ranged from bullfights for Spring 02, to Leigh Bowery for Fall 09 to Atlantis for Spring 09. The shows were almost always imaginative spectacles channeling past and future. Although he died an untimely and tragic death, Lee McQueen lives on as one of the greatest fashion icons of our time.
