via designmilk.
Daryn Ralph is a british textile designer with a talent for elaborate and colorful upholstery. Here, she's re-covered this old chair (the before is seen below) in radiant print and texture to create a wildly contemporary design that speaks to one of our favorite classic sofa designs, the Mah Jong Sofa from Roche Bobois.

Hotel Missoni in Kuwait

Following the success of Hotel Missoni in Edinburgh, the brand opened another hotel in Kuwait this March. Gold and turquoise dominating walls, chandeliers and textiles. Signature stripes as well as playful florals just beg you to sink in, have fun, and luxuriate. Creative Director Rosita Missoni has customized everything in this hotel, from textiles to staff uniforms. As Signora Missoni has put it, "Real luxury is good attentive service, and good and comfortable design. This is real luxury—it’s a simple principle, but we kept them as our focus."

Interiors | Pattern People for Hygge & West

Pattern People just released a series of wallpapers for Hygge & West. The line was inspired by natural beauty like the soft leafy floor of a forest, the creatures of the deep sea, and blooming vines. Hygge & West was created by Christiana Coop and Aimee Lagos, because of their mutual appreciation for the small joys in life. The word hygge in Dutch conveys this sense of cozy lovely comfort best. Aside from their latest collaboration with Pattern People, the two have worked with Julia Rothman, Emily Marie Cox and Oh Joy!

Interiors: Academic Center at University of Oregon

On a recent trip to the University of Oregon in Eugene, I had the privelege or visiting the John E. Jaqua Academic Center for Student Athletes. Full disclosure, my husband Marc Curtis had a big hand in the interior design of this building while working for ZGF in Portland, and brought some innovative solutions to the problem of recognizing award winners and donors while maintaining the integrity of the space.
From Marc:
"We designed this beautiful building, but there's a huge component of recognizing student athlete achievements, as well as major donors to the athletic department. The normal way, the ugly way, is to have a bronze plaque tacked on to the wall and unrelated to the space. We wanted to avoid that, so we spent a lot of time designing solutions that integrated these recognitions into the fabric of the building, inside and out. There’s a great deal of them, so these solutions are actually what defines the public space. As the viewer looks around in the space, the first things that catch their eye are those many examples…..We achieved this by incorporating graphic elements, typography, shapes, colors, and patterns into the materials that the space is built out of.
One example: The bathroom is a recognition of Don Essig, a famous announcer at U of O, and his famous line "It Never Rains at Autzen Stadium." We recorded his voice, created a graphic representation of that recording, and that became the tile pattern in the restrooms."
Another example is a wall of back lit steel laser cut panels that are the names of notable U of O professors."-Claudia Brown

Interiors | Nina Saunders

Nina Saunders is a London-based artist originally from Denmark, and showed at ICFF this week. Her furniture pieces are seen decaying and melting in unusual ways. The past seems to be melting into the more distant past, as if the disintegration is happening backwards. And instead of breaking down, the couch or chair seems to be adding more of itself, in a creepy chaotic fashion.

Interiors | Milan Furniture Fair - Moooi
Marcel Wanders Monster Chair from the Boutique Leather Collectionphotos via mocoloco
The Milan Furniture Fair, otherwise known as, "il Salone," celebrated its 49th year this last week. This pivotal fair is known as the design event where you can find innovation and tradition in a mash up of styles. One of our favorite design groups, Moooi, presented a range of pieces which are both imaginative and functional. Always at the forefront, Marcel Wanders didn't disappoint. His quilted leather Monster Chair features a tonal debossed face playfully placed on the upper back rest. Likewise, the huge, blown up roses reminiscent of English porcelain make a fresh statement on Nika Zupanc's 5 O'Clock Collection. It appears the fashion world's obsession with roses is having its effect on interiors.

Maharam Digital Project

Paul Smith, Fred Tomascelli, Markus Lennenbrink for Maharam
Maharam has teamed up with artists and designers to create a line of digitally-printed wallpapers that can be used in commercial and residential spaces. It seems a logical yet innovative step from art hanging on walls in frames to art as wallpaper, and also a good use of digital technonologies that have recently become a real viable printing option for wallpapers and even rugs and textiles. Digital printing really opens up all the options, without limitation on color, or levels of gradation. Since 1902, Maharam has always been a pioneer in the world of interiors and textiles, and although the brand is huge and recognized the world over, the spirit of forward thinking still shines through in 2010.

INTERIORS: Panic Lobby

Print: Pattern People. Interior: Holst, Osmose. photo: Chris Hodney
For the lobby inside of Portland-based software company, Panic, we created a pattern which was initially based on a persian rug. On close inspection, you can see that the entire rug is drawn by hand, and incorporates a story personal to Panic. There are hamburgers and chips, alluding to the staff's love of late-night snacking, an original Mac computer, as a symbol of the company's dedication to Mac software, and a few of our takes on their logos. We worked with Andee Hess of Osmose Design to bring this to fruition, and it was a daunting but fun project indeed!
