Our collaboration with Scout books has just been released and we are quite pleased with the results. Scout books are 32 pages of pocket-sized goodness created by Portland-based printing press, Pinball Publishing. The idea behind this collaboration was to use some textile-based designs to take these into the fashion realm. Having one of these sticking out of the back pocket of your jeans would not look bad at all if we do say so ourselves!

Interiors | Pattern People for Hygge & West

Pattern People just released a series of wallpapers for Hygge & West. The line was inspired by natural beauty like the soft leafy floor of a forest, the creatures of the deep sea, and blooming vines. Hygge & West was created by Christiana Coop and Aimee Lagos, because of their mutual appreciation for the small joys in life. The word hygge in Dutch conveys this sense of cozy lovely comfort best. Aside from their latest collaboration with Pattern People, the two have worked with Julia Rothman, Emily Marie Cox and Oh Joy!

Above are some fun dot interpretations. Our favorites from New York are Diane Von Furstenberg and Zero + Maria Cornejo's dots. The large scale feels fresh and clean this season.

Resort 11: Textures

On the Resort 11 runways, one of the biggest trends we're seeing is a prevalance of small-scale textures with hints of floral or scenic imagery. It's a nice abstracted update to the ditsy florals that have been all over women's wear and accessories for the last few seasons.

TREND | Swirling Universe

Helmut Lang, Rick Owens, Top Shop, Thakoon. background: Pattern People

We've been seeing these swirly, smokey, cosmological prints on runways and retail for a few seasons now, but they still feel very edgy and new. The mysterious nature of these prints lends a cool sophisticated edge to everything it touches, and so far its been mostly in the realm of the edgiest labels: Helmut Lang, Christopher Kane, Jean-Pierre Braganza, Threeasfour. In other words, if you're starting to think of Fall/Winter 2011, there's still lots of room to explore this direction.

Book featuring Pattern People

Pattern People has been featured in the book, Patterns, from Maomao Publications in Barcelona. The book is a huge compilation of contemporary pattern design edited by Macarena San Martin and featuring artists from around the world such as Catalina Estrada, Steven Harrington, Maira Fukimoto, Carolyn Gavin and lots more.

AW10: Louise Armstrup

Louise Armstrup, background: Pattern People

Louise Armstrup's collection at Copenhagen fashion week featured apocalyptic imagery printed digitally on silk, reminding us of Christopher Kane's atomic explosion prints and some photographic landscape we were seeing on runways back in January. The digital revolution is really beginning to make a big difference in fashion and interiors. Here are some previous posts on the matter:

Pre-Fall 10: Textures

Matthew Williamson, Giambattista Valli, Balenciaga, Derek Lam, Proenza Schouler. Background: Pattern People
Solids can be flat and lifeless, so if you want to maintain a neutral surface while still creating a feeling of luxury, richness, and depth, textures are your answer. Of course, some of the textural prints/weaves shown above take on a life of their own, creating a very bold statement, especially for a non-print print.

Upcoming Trend: Acid Landscape

This future trend seems to be popping up in different corners of high fashion, as well as lower-end retail. From Prada's 70's looking beach scenes to Christopher Kane's apocolyptic mushroom clouds, the mood ranges from mysterious to downright dark. Helmut Lang's moody ocean landscape from Spring 10, is somewhat gothic, and Balenciaga's sweater and coat prints for pre-fall seem to be a continuation from their paint-stroke prints of Spring 10. Here in Pattern People land, we've been combining treated lanscape photos shot in our own surroundings, with geometric elements like stripes. Clouds have also been a huge inspiration.

Pre-Fall 10: Roses

We've been in love with roses lately and so has Tuleh, apparently. Their entire pre-fall line is overflowing with vintage-looking rose prints, while the models embrace the real thing. It's all extremely romantic, almost Victorian, and you can find all manner of rose print already in retail. Here in our studios, we've been playing around with modern photo-treated versions of this beautiful flower.

Pre-Fall 10: Optical Geos

Stark and optical geos are seen all over the Pre-fall 10 collections. Balenciaga's line is stunning, with draped pants that are surely the next big thing in women's trouser shapes. Also present are crayola-colored stockings with what appear to be armored booty heels. Of course the line also presents a few other print trends that we'll cover later. Derek Lam's textural optical zig zaggy lines reminded us of just the sorts of prints we're currently working on.

INTERIORS: Panic Lobby

For the lobby inside of Portland-based software company, Panic, we created a pattern which was initially based on a persian rug. On close inspection, you can see that the entire rug is drawn by hand, and incorporates a story personal to Panic. There are hamburgers and chips, alluding to the staff's love of late-night snacking, an original Mac computer, as a symbol of the company's dedication to Mac software, and a few of our takes on their logos. We worked with Andee Hess of Osmose Design to bring this to fruition, and it was a daunting but fun project indeed!
